This fascinating novel from the United American States tells how thirty-year-old Roy and thirteen-year-old Johnny form a close friendship, which is broken up by unsympathetic busybodies. The author was Jerry Tschappat writing under the pseudonym "Gerald Tesch". He was born in 1933 - being just twenty-three when this book was published - and he may have expired in 1986.

The present post comes from the 1956 first edition: hardback, 318 pages.

A second edition came out two years later (in 1958) as an "uncensored abridgement" in paperback. Here are the front and back covers of that second edition.
